Manhattan — July 28, 2025 Monday’s shooting, in which a gunman killed four people and himself, is considered the deadliest gun attack in New York City over the past 25 years.

The last time a mass shooting as deadly happened in the city was in 2000, when two gunmen robbed a Wendy’s in Flushing, Queens and killed five people. Two people were wounded but survived.

In 2022, a man in a gas mask set off smoke grenades and opened fire inside a subway car in Brooklyn’s Sunset Park neighborhood. Ten people were shot and 19 others suffered injuries, but all of the victims survived.

In 2017, a former doctor at the Bronx-Lebanon Hospital fired an assault rifle in the facility, killing a woman and wounding six, before turning the gun on himself. The shooter was a “disgruntled employee” who resigned before he was to be fired in 2015.

A Marine veteran in 2007 fired dozens of rounds at a pizzeria in Greenwich Village, killing a bartender and two unarmed volunteer police officers who chased him through the neighborhood, before he was shot to death by police, according to multiple reports.

In an announcement made just a day before the deadly Midtown attack, New York City Mayor Eric Adams said the city had experienced the “lowest number of shootings and homicides in the recorded history of the city.”

“We accomplished that task because if guns are not on the street, they cannot be used to harm innocent people, and we accomplished that,” Adams said.

Monday’s attack is the 254th mass shooting in the US this year, according to data from the Gun Violence Archive, a nonprofit that tracks gun-related violence.
