New York Red Bulls 7-0 victory over LA Galaxy

Harrison, NJ (May 10, 2025) — New York Red Bulls defeated 7-0 LA Galaxy home match. Midfielder Emil Forsberg was named MLS Player of Matchday 12 for his two-goal and two-assist night during Saturday’s 7-0 thrashing of the Los Angeles Galaxy in what was a 2024 MLS Cup Final rematch.

Saturday’s offensive explosion was RBNY’s first seven-goal performance in the MLS regular season since their infamous 7-0 blowout of Hudson River Derby rivals New York City FC on May 21, 2016. The win also equaled the largest margin of victory for an MLS Cup rematch, following Chicago Fire FC’s 7-0 victory over Sporting Kansas City (née Wizards) on July 4, 2001.

Forsberg joins Lewis Morgan (Matchday 6 of 2024) as the only Red Bulls to receive the MLS Player of the Matchday award since the start of 2023. He’s also the first Swedish player to earn the honor since Zlatan Ibrahimović with the Galaxy on Matchday 28 of 2019.

He is the first Red Bulls player to earn the award since Lewis Morgan for Matchday 6 during the 2024 campaign, when he scored a hat trick against Inter Miami.

Forsberg assisted on Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting’s opening goal in the seventh minute, then nabbed his first tally of the night in the 16th minute to double New York’s advantage.

The veteran Swede repeated the pattern, providing the helper for Choupo-Moting’s second in the 32nd minute before he gave the Red Bulls a 4-0 lead in the 50th with a brilliant free kick.

With his performance, he joined Antony de Avila in July of 1997 as the only players in franchise history to record multiple goals and multiple assists in a single MLS match.
